Abstract

The A. wonders here about the personality of the entity named Tanit pené Ba'al-literally “Tanit face of Ba'al”-, to which thousands of ex-voto are dedicated, either they are shared or not with god Ba'al Ḥammon, in a number of African tophets. After reminding the reader about the problems that this entity might raise, the A. presents arguments which tend to give credence to the idea that it’s not about an autonomous divine creature but about the name of one of the aspects of Ba'al Ḥammon. Then she shows that, thanks to the comparison between observations made in the Punic, biblical and Egyptian worlds, the characteristics of the divine face lead us to think that that aspect of the god is nothing but its ability to deliver oracles.
