Abstract

The accentual adaptation of anglo-american loan words in russian This article deals with an analysis of the Russian word stress in Anglo-American loan words; this analysis is based on the new Russian Contemporary Dictionary of Foreign Words published in 1992. In about one third of the English loan words mentioned by this dictionary we can notice a shift of the word stress from English to Russian. In most of the nouns this shift can be explained by the Russian system of composition, affixation and stressing, rather than by a false perception of the English word stress by a Russian ear. This adaptation appears as the main way of phonological naturalization of English words in Russian and its efficiency leads to consider the danger of the so-called «Americanization» of the Russian language to-day with scepticism.
