Abstract
Summary A test of comprehension is divided in which the subjects have to fill in blanks which occured in the 3 underlying clauses of a sentence, in the position of the subject and object of the verb. Two experiments, one requiring and oral response, the oiher a written response, performed with students of 18 to 21 years old, have shown that : a) The more a sentence is self embedded, the less it is understood, especially when it is over one degree of self-embedding ; b) When a sentence is made with semantically linked words, it is understood better ; c) The tense of verb has no influence, except in the 2nd degree of self-embedding, where imperfect tense is a source of facilitation ; d) The differences between oral and written responding are not significant.
