Abstract

This country report examines media accountability and the state of journalism in Kyrgyzstan. Although Kyrgyzstan is ranked higher in terms of media freedom in assessments of international reports among the countries of Central Asia and even called a safe haven for reporters in the region, Kyrgyzstan is still lagging behind in media accountability instruments in comparison with the Western world. However, the media accountability landscape in Kyrgyzstan appears to be diversifying, with the growing attention and help of the international media community and actors such as the Internews Network and other international donors. New media and social networking sites play significant roles in some of the recent growing media accountability tools in the context of Kyrgyzstan.
