Abstract

Soon after the arrival of the British in Cyprus, in the summer of 1878, two representatives of the French School at Athens, Mondry Beaudouin (1852-1928) and Edmond Pottier (1855-1934) visited the island to carry out an epigraphical and linguistic survey. The results of their visit are studied here; it yielded a considerable number of inscriptions, both alphabetical and syllabic. In addition to the articles published, it has been possible to consult a report written in 1879 and preserved in the archives of the French School at Athens. In an appendix some antiquities from the village of Tremetousche (ancient Tremithus) are examined, and in particular an inscription on a mosaic discovered in 1966 in the church of the local monastery of St Spyridon.
