Abstract
The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality established patient safety indicators (PSIs) in order to provide information about potential complications or adverse events that could occur in hospitals. A composite measure, the PSI-90, is now included in a hospital's value-based purchasing score. Value-based purchasing is the methodology that helps determine how eligible hospitals will be reimbursed for their Medicare patients.
