Abstract

[The question of availability of books and newspapers on the basis of memories of priests – political prisoners during Stalinism in Poland]. During the period of Stalinism in Poland the catholic clergy was seen by the communist authorities as a covert or overt enemy of the political system of the Polish People's Republic and a rival in the struggle for the rule over people's hearts and minds who enjoyed a huge social authority. The selected memories of priests who were imprisoned for the political reasons during this period were analyzed for the purposes of this article. The motives of book and readership singled out in those publications are an important point of reference for the issue of the functioning of a book in a totalitarian country.
