Abstract
AGU's 1994 Walter Sullivan Award for Excellence in Science Journalism, which recognizes reporting that makes geophysical material accessible and interesting to the general public, was awarded to Robert Kunzig for his article, “Between Home and the Abyss,” published in the December 1993 issue of Discover. The cash award and a plaque were presented to Kunzig by Ocean Sciences Section President Curt Collins during the Honors Banquet at AGU's Spring Meeting in Baltimore, Md.Kunzig's article was a first‐person account of the perils of an ocean dive aboard the deep‐sea submersible Alvin. While gathering background information for a popular account of modem oceanography, Kunzig participated in a cruise in August 1992 aboard the research vessel Atlantis II, operated by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.
