Abstract

Beginning in the nineteenth century, researchers from Basel have been irresistibly drawn toward New Guinea and the surrounding islands, but for reasons unknown to me, they have shown no comparable interest in the African continent. Basel's presence in Africa consisted mainly of the missionaries of the Basel Mission, who worked primarily in Ghana and Cameroon. The African department, which includes North Africa, therefore occupies a rather modest place in the collections, comprising about 27,000 accessioned objects.
