Abstract

AbstractAround 1900 in the Second German Empire the industrial society transformed to an imperialistic society. Before that public discussion dealt with the social integration of the working classes into the nation, whereas after 1900 the point of public interest expanded to cultural topics in general. For the future formation of nation and society seemed undecided; there was a thorough discussion about the identity and the chances of development of a political culture. This forms the background for a dispute within the humanities about the unity of the historische Kulturwissenschaften (Max Weber) and for the struggle of the historian Karl Lamprecht for a foreign cultural policy of the Reich under the leadership of the humanities on the Eve of World War I.
