Abstract
Presented paper deals with a problem of history and etymology of Polish word czytac ‘to read’. Author discusses two questions: reconstructed Proto-Indo-European root for Polish (and in generally Slavic) word with potential initial * s -, and grammatical relations between basis ( czyśc ) and derivative ( czytac ) with comparison to similar couples ( present – iterative ) in various languages. This paper is a first part of a row made of three connected articles, and due to its introductory character it also gives some preliminary comments and organizing remarks to the series of texts as a whole.
