Abstract

The Kronig structure on the high-frequency side of the x-ray K-absorption edge of a thin single crystal of Cu has been investigated using 82.4% polarized x rays. The Kronig-structure energy positions were observed to shift with 30°, 60°, and 90° rotations of the single-crystal absorber. A similar absorption curve was obtained by using a thin polycrystalline copper absorber. The five absorption curves are compared and tabulated out to 350 ev from the main K edge. The shifts in energy position of the Kronig structure are discussed in relation to the highly polarized x rays.
