Abstract

The Sri Lanka Journal of Psychiatry (SLJP) is a peer-reviewed, open access journal published bi annually by the Sri Lanka College of Psychiatrists.The Journal publishes original papers, brief reports including case reports and commentaries relevant to psychiatry and allied sciences. Summary

Introduction

Emil Kraepelin (1856-1926) is recognised as the founder of modern psychiatry. This is mostly due to his pioneering work on psychiatric nosology and the delineation of schizophrenia (dementia praecox) and bipolar affective disorder (manic depressive insanity). In 1904, Emil Kraepelin visited Sri Lanka ( Ceylon) and spent nearly four weeks travelling around the island (which included a three-day visit to South India). Emil Kraepelin embarked on his trip to Java with his brother Karl on 23 December 1903 (Figure 1).
