Abstract

Space programs such as telecommunications, remote sensing and navigation, are fundamental activities for the development of the Latin American countries, and their interests in these fields are growing for several years now. However, they are still bound to require some external assistance related to satellite construction and launching, as well as for accessing to advanced technologies. This contribution focuses on the European spaceport, Kourou, in French Guyana, and on how it contributes to the country’s growth. Firstly, it analyzes the legal regime of the Center. Then, the contribution addresses the aspect of international cooperation with the coming of new launchers inside the spaceport. Finally, it discusses the importance of Kourou for French Guyana. Indeed, the role of the Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales through various initiatives with Universities and space industries are particularly important for the economic development and the educational plan of the country.
