Abstract

ABSTRACT The Kosi debacle has high lighted the urgent need to attend to the Kosi problem. A three stage solution is envisaged in this connection. Closing the breach in the eastern embankment would naturally achieve the highest priority. The second stage work is considered to be the provision of second line of defence for mitigating and localizing the flood inundation, if and when a breach in the embankment accidentally occurs in spite of all precautions. The river is aggrading due to deficient slope. Keeping in view this morphologic process of the Kosi alluvial fan a long term solution is suggested. The above views about possible solution to Kosi problem are presented to invite comments and discussions. It is hoped that these would lead to evolution of the most appropriate solution by concerned agencies and experts.
