Abstract
This paper deals with correlative approach in teaching suffixation within the field of Serbian language and literature course, which is a part of the 6th grade elemen- tary school curriculum. The goal of the paper is to examine the significance and role of internal correlation, i.e. correlation between the different branches of a subject, aimed at helping students to achieve a more functional knowledge of word formation. The main goals of the research are the following: to give a review of literature related to correla- tion method in teaching; to show the potential advantages of the method on the example of a lesson plan; to highlight a new approach to teaching suffixation at elementary school level, with the purpose of achieving learning outcomes and enhancing active learning. The proposed model of internal correlation is based on students’ experience, enhances their creativity and critical thinking, as well as vocabulary expansion. Teaching word formation is no longer formal and normative – it becomes creative and functional
