Abstract

The first scientific studies on the relation of Korean with the Altaic languages, especially Turkish, began in the 1920s. The first attempt to determine the connection of Korean with Altaic languages and its phonetic equivalence with those languages regarding its phonetic and stylistic structure was seen in the dissertation of B. D. Polivanov in 1917. The phonologically and morphologically comparative study of Korean and Altaic languages consists of Remarks on the Korean Language by Ramstedt in 1928. Despite Ramstedt’s comprehensive study, the relation between Korean and other Altaic languages -Turkish, Mongolian, Tungusic- has not been entirely accepted. In this article, the case suffixes in Korean and Turkish are compared to further explore the cognateness of Korean with Altaic languages.
