Abstract

Previous studies have shown varying results for preference and understanding of different varieties of world Englishes according to the region and level of familiarity. This paper looks at Korean students’ ability to comprehend different selected world Englishes, as well as their preferences and level of familiarity. It confirms the General American variety as the most easy to understand and the most familiar. This variety was also the most preferred together with British Received Pronunciation, showing a strong preference for the most standard varieties of English. The results suggest that Korean students need greater exposure to other varieties of world Englishes.
