Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine Korean adult learners` understanding about English as a world language and their attitudes towards English variation. As the world has become globalized, English is being used in many parts of the world as a tool of communication. In this context, the present study is aimed at investigating how Korean adults learners of English as a foreign language (EFL) understand English as a world language. The data for this study were collected from 176 Korean EFL adults learners in Gwangju and analyzed by SPSS Window 14.0 Version. A survey questionnaire was used to examine the perception and attitudes of adults learners. This findings suggest that English instructors should introduce the World English perspectives and help their students to be exposed to the varieties of English in their classes in order to raise students` awareness of these varieties and to enhance their self-confidence.
