Abstract
Summary 1. Kinetin has been shown to antagonize the light induced inhibition of the germination of the negatively photo blastic seeds of Zygophyllum coccineum . 2. Abscisic acid inhibits the germination of these seeds both in dark and in light; the inhibition is more pronounced in light than in dark. 3. Kinetin antagonizes the inhibitory effect of abscisic acid on germination in light. At high concentrations of kinetin with abscisic acid the germination is higher than in water. 4. In dark, the root growth is inhibited by kinetin as it is in light with high concentrations. In light (not in dark) kinetin promotes the growth of the hypocotyl. 5. Abscisic acid inhibits the root growth in dark and light. The inhibition increases progressively by the rise of abscisic acid concentration. 6. Concentrations of kinetin lower than 5 × 10 −5 M show no antagonistic effect on the abscisic acid induced inhibition of hypocotyl growth in light. At higher concentrations of kinetin (5 × 10 −5 M) the inhibition caused byabscisic acid is completely abolished and the hypocotyl is longer than in water. 7. Kinetin and abscisic acid have synergistic inhibitory effects on root growth when abscisic acid is at low concentrations. At high concentrations of the inhibitor the root growth is stimulated by kinetin. 8. A hypothesis was suggested to illustrate the hormonal control in the germination of the negatively photo blastic seeds of Zygophyllum coccineum in light.
