Abstract

Summary SNOMED CT is universally recommended as a new medical terminology standard. Its introduction requires considerable human resources and financial costs, while its real benefits are the subject of intense debate, especially in the German-speaking community. In this contribution the author discusses why SNOMED CT has the potential to bring substantial benefits without additional workload for day-to-day clinical documentation. The use of international standards also generates new opportunities not only for routine documentation but also for secondary use of clinical data. Einfuhrung
