Abstract

The analysis of A. Mickiewicz’s poem ’’Konrad Wallenrod” presented in the article illustrates the two fold structures typical of Baltic mythology that present themselves in the poem through the figures of Alban and Konrad. Baltic mythology manifests a kind of dyads, whose left member is older and is connected with magic, chtonic space and water, while the right member is younger and is connected with secular matters, war, celestial sphere and fire. Baltic mythology manifests such dyads in pairs of Patolas Patrimpas, Brutenis-Videvutis, kaukas-aitvaras, Devil-God, etc. This type of dyad is presented in the poem through the Alban-Konrad pair. The first member, being the older one, is connected with sacred matters while the second, being the younger one, represents war and secular matters.
