Abstract
Islamic boarding schools can act as religious education institutions and also become institutions of social and economic education in improving the welfare of pesantren, santri, alumni and their fellow communities. The research aims to design a model of development communication through the santri economic empowerment program in Islamic boarding school education. Using Participatory Learning and Action (PLA), the selection of informants purposively, consisting of boarding schools, religious teachers, santri and community leaders. Data collection through documentation analysis, direct observation, interviews, Focus Group Discussion (FGD) and Participatory Decision Making (PDM). Research location in Al-Muttaqin Islamic Boarding School, Beber Cirebon, West Java. Analysis of research data using interactive analysis through the stages of data reduction, data presentation and verification and conclusion. The results of the study show that pesantren can design a communication model for counseling and empowerment of santri economics through entrepreneurship and cooperative material in the education curriculum as a choice or additional lesson for santri along with practical and internship programs. Santri will have entrepreneurial skills, independence and welfare, create harmony with the community and anticipate the negative stigma of boarding schools that are exclusive, closed and radical.
