Abstract

The new ICD-11 will include the disorder «complex post-traumatic stress disorder (cPTSD)». This new disorder describes the more complex symptoms that are typical of individuals that have been exposed to chronic trauma – usually in the context of attachment relationships in childhood. The article reviews the history of this new diagnosis, its theoretical and empirical foundations, and describes guidelines of the clinical work with patients suffering from complex PTSD. It is discussed how this concept relates to the theoretical foundations and clinical practice of systemic psychotherapy
