The mechanism of pruritus which can be seen in various systemic diseases is uncertain Histamine neuropeptides transformation substances of arachidonic acid and enkephalins are mediators in pruritus and opioids enkephalins transmit the pain and pruritus Cholestasis with any cause is often associated with pruritus Bile acids and endogen opioids play major role in cholestatic pruritus Several drugs have been used in the management but actually there are reports suggesting that ursodeoxychalic acid may be administered with benefit to children who have cholestasis Key words: cholestasis pruritus bile acids opioids ursodeoxycholic acid
