Abstract
The paper describes a method for building rule-based systems within conventional data-processing (DP) environments. This is achieved by using tools to represent, capture, and test rule-based knowledge and, subsequently, to convert this knowledge into source code in high-level languages such as PASCAL, COBOL, or C. The rule-based knowledge is represented by structured decision trees and the generated source code can be integrated within the mainstream DP development. The tools described represent the first generation of knowledge-engineering CASE tools.
