Ponte - Oct 2017 - Volume 73 - Issue 10 doi: 10.21506/j.ponte.2017.10.38 Abstract:Purpose: This study was investigated the knowledge, attitudes, and educational needs concerning elderly sexuality among North Korean defectors. Methods: This was a descriptive study. Data were collected from July to November, 2016. One hundred nineteen North Korean in were surveyed. Data were analyzed using SPSS 21.0. Results: Mean scores on the knowledge, attitudes, and educational needs measures were 10.53/29, 23.50/40, and 33.11/50 respectively. There were significantly differences knowledge according to age and marital status. There were also significant differences in attitude according to gender, and educational needs depending on marital status. Higher levels of knowledge of sexuality were significantly correlated with more permissive attitudes and higher educational needs. Conclusion: North Korean defectors had poor knowledge of elderly sexuality they tended to have rather permissive attitudes toward elderly sexuality. The findings also indicated that higher knowledge was associated with more permissive attitudes and greater education needs concerning elderly sexuality. Taken together, the results indicate that appropriate education about the healthy sexual activities of elderly people would be helpful for defectors� stable settlement in South Korean society.
