Abstract

A descriptive study was conducted to assess the knowledge and attitude of auto rickshaw drivers on care of victims during road traffic accident in selected urban area, at Trivandrum. Majority (42.5%) of the auto rickshaw drivers had average knowledge. The range, maximum score, mean, median, standard deviation and mean percentage of knowledge questionnaire were 324, 26, 15.5, 16, 3.99, and 59.61 respectively. The subjects had the subjects had average knowledge regarding general care (57.28%,) care in spinal cord injuries (58.2%) and care in fracture of extremities (58.71%) whereas the subjects are having a good knowledge in care in bleeding (62.66%) and in care in head injuries (65%). Majority (53.75%) of the auto rickshaw drivers had unfavorable attitude. The range, maximum score, mean, median, standard deviation and mean percentage of attitude scale were 22–52, 54, 35.5, 35, 7.04, 65.7% respectively. There is a negative correlation between knowledge and attitude. The overall findings of the study revealed that majority of the auto rickshaw drivers have average knowledge but unfavorable attitude. Hence, it is concluded that further improvement of knowledge and attitude regarding care of victims during road traffic accident is needed.
