Abstract

ABSTRACT In recent years the interactive Web 2.0 methods of financing projects and ideas have gained importance. Crowdfunding, initially used within the creative field, also provides opportunities for financing specific projects by nonprofit organizations (NPOs). So far, academics have been paying only little attention to this new funding opportunity for NPOs, in particular in the German-speaking countries. Thus we conducted a survey to explore the current state of affairs. Our empirical results indicate that both the knowledge and the application of crowdfunding are still in their infancy in Austria, Germany, and Switzerland. Still, we identified a few pioneers in the field. Other nonprofits can learn from their experiences. Keywords crowdfunding, nonprofit organizations, social media, financing, online fundraising
