Knowledge and adoption level of farmers of Haryana about scientific wheat cultivation practices

Abstract

Wheat (Triticum aestivum) is a staple foodgrain and an integral part of the country's economy and food security. Wheat cultivation practices must be ensured to attain the goal of agricultural sustainability. A survey was undertaken to study the knowledge and adoption of scientific wheat cultivation practices in Haryana covering four districts viz; Karnal, Kurukshetra, Kaithal and Ambala. From each district two blocks, from each block one village and from each village 20 farmers were selected by using stratified random sampling technique. Data were collected by using personal interview method during 2011 from small, medium and large farmers proportionately. Majority of the farmers (61.25%) had medium level of knowledge and adoption (56.87%) of scientific wheat cultivation practices. More number of large farmers had high level of knowledge and adoption as compared to medium and small farmers. More awareness programmes be organized to increase level of knowledge and adoption of wheat cultivation practices to sustain wheat production in Haryana.
