Abstract

Knowledge of events surrounding conception, pregnancy, birth and early infant care was explored by interviewing 171 Pedi women delivering in hospitals or clinics. Findings suggest that in general, knowledge about these events seems to be inadequate. In particular, knowledge about the timing of conception, the reasons underlying dietary and other behavioural practices during pregnancy, common obstetrical techniques and some facilitative breast feeding practices appears to be lacking.
