Abstract

Y-chromosome STR profiles are being increasingly used in forensic investigations. Differences between populations in male-specific DNA markers can be large (relative to autosomal ones) and this knowledge has implications for appropriate database construction. Also, in cosmopolitan populations, such as Australia, asymmetrical admixture between groups can have important effects. This paper reports on these issues as they relate to the South Australian Y chromosome Aboriginal database.
