Abstract

In most industry settings, firing employees is straightforward. Emotional components aside, the legal act of separating employees from companies outside of higher education is often quick and simple. In the academy, however, the task can be more difficult. Releasing tenured faculty members requires substantial cause, and even staff member separations can be complicated by various university policies and requirements.
