Abstract

While surveying the internal helminths and nasal mites of birds collected near New Orleans, Louisiana a single specimen of the Rufous-sided Towhee, Pipilo erythrophthalamus L., was found infected with “scaly-leg” disease. Acarids of the family Knemidokoptidae which are responsible for “scaly-leg” and “depluming” of birds have been reviewed recently by Fain & Elsen (Acta Zool. Path. Antver. 45: 3–145, 1967). The family consists of 12 species which comprise 4 genera. The specimens obtained from the lesions on the legs of the Towhee were identified as Knemidokoptes jamaicensis Turk.
