Abstract

Summary A clarification of the relationship between theory and practice in psychoanalysis from the perspective of the history of psychoanalysis. Some comments on Dieter Tenbrink’s theses on psychoanalytic thinking and the psychoanalytic attitude The theses of Dieter Tenbrink are a brillant summary of the aspects of the relations between theory and practice in the line of tradition of classical psychoanalysis. This shows on one hand the power of this line of tradition, but on the other hand also the weaknesses, which mainly have their roots in the incomplete grasp of the elements of experience stemming from the early preverbal experiences with the mother. This issue was the point which led to divergences in the early years of psychoanalysis. Individual aspects were then explored and elaborated in the different lines of tradition. With the overview that we have today, a more balanced and integrative consideration is possible. The theses of Dieter Tenbrink are discussed against this background.
