Abstract

Some clinical experiences are reported from a three months consultancy in psychiatry at åsgård sykehus, the northernmost psychiatric hospital in Norway. The problems discussed are: (1) how the geography of northern Norway places special requirements on the quality of the psychiatric service in the region; (2) how there is a need for differentiation of acute and long stay patients in separate wards; (3) how relapses due to discontinuation of maintenance drug treatment in schizophrenic patients are frequent; (4) how the pressure for intake of emergency cases shortens the period of hospitalization to an extent that afflicts the quality of diagnosis and treatment planning; (5) how too short hospitalization of manic-depressive patients may involve high risks; and (6) how psychosis developed in connection with international travel constitutes a considerable proportion of admissions.
