Abstract

This study uses a qualitative methodology to explore the instructional reading practices of high achieving/low‐income elementary schools. Extensive interviews and observations were conducted to examine the nature of literacy gains on a statewide reading assessment from fall to spring. Detailed cases studies of four exceptional schools are presented along with a discussion of implications for the field of reading instruction.
