Abstract
The Violent Femmes have never found mainstream stardom, and this might be due to the tormented nature of their work coupled with the tongue-in-cheek nature of some lyrics. Defining indie rock, the critics give some essential features of the Violent Femmes’ music: iconoclastic playfulness, appropriation of the punk-rock aesthetic without the overtly confrontational stance, that aggressiveness being replaced by the use of sensitive lyrics coupled with biting irony. After introducing the band’s tortured style, this article locates it in relation to romanticism and the American Gothic, before examining expressions of frustrated lust and spiritual salvation.
