Abstract

Abstract While Hosea may give the initial impression of being hostile to Israelite kings and kingship, a careful read of the book as a whole reveals a more nuanced view of Israelite kingship than one might expect. Israelite kingship is currently corrupt and ineffectual, to be sure. As a result, Yhwh will sweep it away, leave the Israelites with no native king of their own, to be ruled instead by the foreign king of Assyria. This is not the end of Israelite kingship, though. Rather, it is merely an intermediate step on the road to a restored kingship, in which a future Davidic king will rule the people of Judah and Israel together.
