Abstract

For visitors to Perth, as well as for its own inhabitants, Kings Park provides excellent possibilities to learn about the Australian landscape, its flora, fauna, and cultural history. As recounted by Erickson, the creation of Kings Park, which is centered around Mount Eliza and directly overlooks both the Swan River and a then fledgling colonial settlement, was a remarkable act of foresight by Perth's colonizers. The land that Kings Park now occupies was first identified for its public value in 1830 by Perth's Surveyor-General John Septimus Roe-an act for which he is now immortalized with the eponymous Roe Gardens at the southern end of the Botanic Gardens. As it has turned out Kings Park now extends into the very city center. The ecological value of this conserved bushland is significant, with Perth being located in one of only 34 global hotspots of biodiversity, namely, the South-west Australian Floristic Region.
