Abstract

This review presents the kinetics and mechanistic aspects of oxidation of organic substrates by cerium(IV). The reactions have been categorized in the presence of sulfuric acid and micellar media. It is pertinent to discuss the characterization of the kinetically active cerium(IV) species in the oxidation of different types of organic substrates in acid and micellar media. Effects of both cationic and anionic surfactants have been correlated in terms of structural and other properties of the substrates. In aqueous-micellar media, the different sulfato complexes of Ce(IV) are expected to be partitioned in different ways. This partitioning behavior may be helpful to identify the kinetically active species. This review also explains the origin of acid catalysis of Ce(IV) oxidation in aqueous sulfuric acid media.
