Abstract

The rate of two-line ferrihydrite transformation with respect to temperature and adsorbed arsenate under alkaline conditions was determined via batch experiments. The rate of transformation to either goethite or hematite increases with temperature and follows first order reaction kinetics. However, as the As/Fe ratio is increased from 0.010 to 0.018, the rate of transformation decreases by two orders of magnitude with no crystallization observed at As/Fe ratios > 0.018. These results are relevant for determining the long-term stability of two-line ferri-hydrite in tailings from U mill operations.KeywordsMine TailingFerric OxideSodium ArsenatePristine ConditionAdsorbed ArsenateThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
