Abstract

Rate coefficients for the reactions Cl + NO3 ClO + NO2 (2) and ClO + NO3 products (3) were determined from observation of the kinetic behavior of NO3 and ClO in the modulated photolysis of Cl2-ClONO2-N2 mixtures at 1 atm pressure and in the temperature range 278-338 K. NO3 was monitored in absorption at lambda = 662 nm and formation of ClO in reaction 2 was indicated by observation of the characteristic absorption spectrum in the ASII withdraws XSII system. The results gave k2 = (5.5 +/- 2.0) x 10 cmT molecule s independent of temperature and k3 = (1.6 +/- 1.6/0.8) x 10 S exp(-(420 +/- 200)/T) cmT molecule: s . The relative importance of the channels forming ClOO and OClO in reaction 3 is discussed.
