Abstract

The kinetics of the reaction of CH 2OH with O( 3P) has been investigated in a heatable tubular reactor coupled to a photoionization mass spectrometer. The decay of CH 2OH was monitored as a function of O-atom concentration ([O] 0/[CH 2OH] 0 &>; 20) to determine rate constants as a function of temperature and pressure. The rate constants are independent of density and were fit to an Arrhenius expression: (1.9 ± 0.37) x 10 −10 exp [2.0 ± 0.9) kJ mol −1/ RT] cm 3 molecule −1 s −1 over the temperature range 300–508 K. Both formaldehyde and formic acid were detected as products of the CH 2OH + O( 3P) reaction.
