Abstract
The value of the proton diffusion coefficient D H + in ice was extracted from the diffusion-controlled rate k D of the proton recombination reaction RO − + H 3O + → k D ROH + H 2O in polycrystalline doped ice. At −10°C, D H + was estimated to lie between 3.5×10 −6 and 1.3×10 −5 cm 2 s −1, well below the corresponding value of (4.1 ± 0.1)×10 −5 cm 2 s −1 found in supercooled water.
