Abstract

Brief inspection of the empirical summary equation of photosynthesis reveals that one molecule of oxygen is produced for each molecule of carbon dioxide fixed: $$\rm CO_2+2H_2O\ {\mathop{\longrightarrow}\limits_{green\ plant}}\ (CH_2O)+H_2O+O_2$$ The purpose of this experiment is to compare the kinetics of carbon dioxide assimilation and oxygen evolution in the alga Scenedesmus obliquus over a period of steady-state (constant rate) photosynthesis.
