Abstract

The kinetics of oxidn. of acetaldehyde by chloramine-T (I) in HCl, HClO4 and H2SO4 media shows a 1st order dependence each on oxidant, substrate and [H+] ion concns., but the rate law reduces to rate = k [I] at higher aldehyde and hydrogen ion concns. A mechanism in terms of a slow interaction between N-chlorotoluenesulfonamide and the aldehyde mol. is proposed. [on SciFinder(R)]
