Abstract

The kinetics of ion exchange of K+, Rb+, Cs+ and Tl+ on ammonium 12-molybdophosphate (AMP) was studied as a function of particle size, temperature and concentration of the exchanging ions, using a potentiometric method. Treatment of the kinetic data according to well-established rate laws has yielded diffusion coefficients, as well as enthalpies and entropies of activation for the exchange reactions. There is evidence that the exchange of K+ on AMP is accompanied by a phase transition. In the exchanger phase, the diffusion coefficient of Rb+ is consistently larger than that of Cs+, which distinguishes AMP from all other known ion exchangers.
