Abstract

The kinetics of the consecutive hydrogenation of phenol to cyclohexanol via cyclohexanone on a platinum on silica gel catalyst at 150°C was studied. On the basis of a detailed kinetic analysis of isolated single reactions it was possible to predict the behaviour of the consecutive reaction system. The course of the overall reaction can be described kinetically on the basis of rate equations of the Langmuir-Hinshelwood type using for each substance a single value of adsorption coefficient for both composing reactions. Thus it can be assumed that both these reactions occur on the same sites of the catalytic surface. The power-type equations are unsuitable for the description of the over-all course of a consecutive catalytic reaction system.
