Abstract
Mathematical modeling and experimental observation of coupled interfacial chemical reactions and diffusion in multicomponent metallic and ionic systems have been carried out. Simultaneous electrochemical reactions in the interfacial reaction zone of finite thickness serve as boundary conditions for the computation of diffusion in both phases. Based on comparison with earlier modeling, the coupling factor for simultaneous reactions is identified and linearization of equations for simplicity in mathematical operations is avoided. Experiments have been carried out in the system of Fe-Mn-Si alloy/CaO-SiO2-Al2O3 slags by measuring concentration profiles with an electron microprobe. The model is substantiated by experimental data obtained in the present work.
